John Johnson
In 1942, at the age of 24, John Johnson self-published a small periodical called Negro Digest.  He used $500 to get his start.  The money was secured from a loan on his mother's furniture!
Three years later he launched Ebony magazine.

From this meager start Johnson built his business into a billion-dollar publishing empire.  In 1982 he became the first African-American to be featured on Forbes magazine's list of the 400 richest Americans.
