Richard Bolles' job-hunting book, What Color is Your Parachute,
was originally a self-published work (1970). To date this manual for job-hunters and career-changers has sold over
8,000,000 copies!
Richard Paul Evans sent his manuscript for
The Christmas Box
to six agents. All six rejected it. Because he believed so strongly in the story he decided to self-publish the book, sure that readers would want it even if agents had no faith in his work. Evans designed a simple cover and, for very little cost, went about marketing his book in his own home-state of Utah. Eventually, The Christmas Box sold so well in Utah that New York publishers were forced to stand up and take notice! In the 1990's Evans sold the rights to his book and signed a contract with Simon & Schuster valued at $4.25 million.
